We are so close to the start of the new school year. As I was looking into the student roster this year, It seems I will work with more than 3 students coming in. They will be our brand-new kindergarten students! It’s exciting to meet new students and learn about them. Especially, it also has been my passion to help them adjust to the new school, routine, teachers, and peers at school. In the kindergarten classroom, a teacher uses the first 2-3 months to explain the school expectations and practice together.
Autism in Kindergarten: What Parents should know
Summer time was great but I am sure our parents whose children will start elementary school after summer might have been anxious the whole summer. It’s a big transition. Yes. It’s almost easier for them if they know what would be the biggest struggles once they start being at school. But, how can a person predict the future? Well, if you ask, I can list out some of the struggles many of my students had in the kindergarten classroom. Are you ready?
- Being able to sit in a large group setting for 15-20 minutes and longer
- Asking for help when needed
- Staying with a group
- Using a toilet independently
- Eating snacks and lunch with minor help
- Engage in a free play situation independently
In order to complete some tabletop activities, it would be nice for a child to complete simple art activities such as cutting, gluing, and coloring. Even if a child needs help at the time, it’s ok. She or he will grow more independent as the class continues working on these skills throughout the year.
