It has been a unique year- at least for the last 4 months of school. Most K-2nd grade students didn’t have a solid in-person classroom experience before this school year. As much as we would like to pull out simple activities and worksheets to engage and teach students, I can’t help noticing the lack of foundational school readiness skills from many young children this year.
In Kindergarten, besides engagement and following basic direction skills, I noticed that many teachers spend lots of their teaching fine motor skills development. Regardless of that students came in with low muscle tone or not, any kindergarten students spend some time working on pulling, pushing, picking up, and pinching small objects to develope their fine motor skills.
(Fine Motor Skills Activity)
During PE or outdoor playtime, they also have to work on gross motor skills similar to these skills by pulling out the wagon, picking up toys/putting away, etc.

If parents or teachers want to facilitate these skills while using paper-based activities, let’s focus on fine motor cutting and tracing. For the first several months in Kindergarten, they are not expected to write a full sentence or equip themselves with perfect spelling. Therefore, a fine motor skills worksheet would be the perfect way to ease themselves into the real academic work down the road.
