What do you use to teach academics in special education? It has been a critical part of my job to try and adapt different curriculum ideas to meet each student’s unique needs in my learning center serving K-2nd grade students with learning differences,
A special educator in the neighborhood school (within the district) asked me one day what I used to teach reading and math. I have heard that she is struggling with her students this year.
I have shared the names of the reading curricula I use this year and some math ideas….It would be nice if those work for her students, but I highly doubt it. She would have to try and adapt depending on her student’s profile.

Here are some of my favorite academic resources in special education and autism classrooms at the elementary level.
- Edmark Reading Program (sight words based reading)
- Lexia (phonics)
- Primary Phonics (decoding, phonics)
- Explore the Code (decoding, phonics)
- Raz-Plus (reading comprehension)
- Touch Math (teaching numbers with visuals)
- Starfall (letters, numbers)
- IXL (grade level math and ELA)
- Writing Wizard App (tracing letters and words)
