I have enjoyed this big project of fine motor skills workbook with my students since the beginning of the school year.
Fine motor skills are THE foundational skill to be able to learn other academics and participate in various school activities with some level of independence.
I am not just talking about writing or arts and craft. What about flipping the book, or opening a plastic bag of crackers? Once a child becomes confident with hand-eye coordination and manipulating fingers with adequate strength in their hands, he/she can proudly attend and complete the school assignment throughout the day. In the field of ABA, we have this term, cusp behavior, which allows children, individuals, or loved ones to access the world in a whole new way. In that sense, working on fine motor-related skills is essential in my special education classroom.
