Crisis Prevention and Intervention

Prevention

I have spent some time researching the topics of crisis prevention and intervention for the last 2 weeks, specifically related to developmental disabilities and challenging behaviors at school and in rehabilitation programs for adults.

Crisis Prevention Institute is a leading organization in training and educating the world about the importance of prevention, de-escalation, and problem-solving when approaching a crisis moment. Also, I have looked up Pro-Act and Safety Care as well.

Professional Assault Crisis Training was initially developed in 1975 by Pau A. Smith, Ph. D., evolving in 2004 into what it is now known as Pro-Act. I think it was in 2006 when I was first certified in Pro-Act, which was my first experience with any crisis prevention intervention training.

Safety Care has been around in the field for 20+ years and now became one of the most popular training programs due to its evidence-based approach. Safety Care focuses on how to prevent behavioral challenges, de-escalate early and manage behaviors safely in the environment.

These 3 are widely used in schools and programs serving individuals with developmental disabilities and possible behavior challenges. Looking through their philosophies and curriculum guidelines, it wasn’t hard to see several ideas consistently delivered in common in these 3 programs.

  1. Prevention
  2. De-escalation
  3. Teamwork

It’s exciting to hear more people start thinking about safety and prevention first instead of focusing on reactive strategies in crisis moments. It is truly a culture shift and mindset change. I am proud that I am part of this big wave.
