Turn Autism Around by Dr. Mary Barbera

If you are looking for autism resources and easy books to understand autism and language delays, this is a book for you. I spent this weekend reading Dr. Mary Lynch Barbera’s second book Turn Autism Around. What a great book for parents, practitioners, and teachers who work with kids with some level of developmental delay.

When I said “delays”, it aches.

My dearest nephew JJ is 3 years old now. Ever since he was born, he was always “slow” in reaching his developmental milestones. He was late in flipping over, crawling, standing, and even walking. JJ was a so-called easy baby. He slept a lot. When he took a nap during the day, he would sleep for 2-3 hours without waking. He loved to be cuddled up and didn’t really care much about whose arms. He would love to be held in tightly.

At the age of 3, he began going to his pre-school where his mom (my sister) started noticing differences between JJ and other kids in the school. It’s heartbreaking to see JJ stay silent while the rest of the kids greet their teachers cheerfully.

My sister asks me, “Where do I begin?”, “Should I teach colors?”, “I am not sure if he benefits from going to school.” and so on.

Since I can’t meet JJ or my sister every day due to the distance, I was not able to bring up good suggestions or action plans for my sister right there. She was disappointed. But we agreed to communicate as often as possible for my suggestions and work through them together. It takes a village to raise a child, right?

When I was reading Turn Autism Around, I felt super excited thinking of supporting parents like my sister.

Instead of going through the full scale of fancy assessment, Dr. Barbera has shared a 1-page TAA assessment form. Based on this, we could organize our thoughts and start planning for the treatment plan.

It is a great guide for parents, teachers, and practitioners who support young children with signs of autism or other developmental delays.
