Do you have students, clients, or loved ones who are slow talkers? Haven’t started talking fluently when his or her peers use sentences to communicate? It’s just a heartbreaking thing to hear. Then, what’s our next step? Are we going to wait and give more time to them? Do they need an official diagnosis to get the necessary treatments?
Dr. Mary L Barbera’s Turn Autism Around, one of my favorite books, suggested many ideas and strategies help these kids and parents when dealing with situations like this. Such a great book!
Turn Autism Around was forwarded by Dr. Temple Grandin who also suggested this matter in her own books as well. Dr. Grandin mentioned slowing down the word when speaking to those kids- and pairing them with actual objects or pictures really helps them pick up the language.

As well known, Temple Grandin was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2. It seems that she started talking later (around 6 or 7 years old?) and went through many challenges associated with language and sensory processing challenges. Her life came out in a movie and got much attention from the world. Despite her life-long challenges from her condition, she become one of the most popular autism and neurodiversity advocates in the world. She travels the world to share her life and experiences to support those who go through the same. Temple Grandin’s Thinking in Pictures also includes the most recent research, therapy, and resources in the field of autism.
