Autism Classroom Setup

There are so much information and resources out there to help teachers, clinicians, and parents set up effective autism classroom and program. That’s awesome. Any new teachers can get easily more ideas on autism classroom intervention.

When I set up the classroom or autism program, I do consider a couple of things.

  1. Are they evidence-based interventions?
  2. Does it align with ABLLS-R and VB-MAPP?

Since I use ABLLS-R and VB-MAPP for the assessment and curriculum development, it makes sense to align with the program. Dr. Mark Sundberg also made clear suggestions on the autism program and its program components in his paper.

After teaching and setting up autism classrooms (special education classrooms) for the last 20 years in public schools and private settings, these are the MUST-HAVES for the meaningful autism classroom setup that I suggest. In a school setting, we should consider academics first. It’s really hard to find books and curricula that suit the unique needs of our students. As a result, I have created a sequence of skill-building workbooks for MATH and WRITING for students with autism and language delays.

For READING, as Edmark online reading program is recommended, it will be nice with supplementary practice worksheets for generalization. SOCIAL SKILLS and BEHAVIOR should be taught meaningfully in the classroom by utilizing skill-based strategies and hands-on experiences. In order to enhance CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT, parents-teacher communication templates, and data collection sheets will be crucial.
