I see many teachers in our district are equipped with some curriculum guides to follow when teaching core academics. But I love to see how teachers also bring some fun activities to motivate students in learning through read-aloud, art and craft, and songs, etc.
For example, October is a great month to celebrate Halloween. It’s one of my favorite holidays to talk about, read, do arts and crafts on. I am sure many of young students feel the same way. Teachers would read about bats, spiders, pumpkins, and so on. Students will engage in writing activities on what costume they would like to choose to wear on Halloween and give 3 good reasons to justify their thoughts. What a great way to teach an opinion writing unit.
Theme-based learning is very popular at pre-school levels and many special education teachers also plan their teaching based on these monthly themes.
Theme based Learning은 미국 프리스쿨(유아원), 초등학교에서 많이 사용하는 수업 방법인데, 한국어로 번역하면 “주제중심 수업” 이다.
교과과정을 풀어나가는 과정에서 그 달의 주요한 행사나 할리데이를 수업의 컨텍스(Context)로 이용하면 학생들의 집중도 뿐아니라 결과(outcome)도 좋았다고 연구는 전하고 있다.
10월은 할로윈(Halloween) 덕에 주제가 넘쳐나는 신나는 한 달이다. 그도 그럴 것이, 여러가지 측정도구를 사용해서 크다, 작다, 무겁다, 가볍다 등의 컨셉을 배울 때, 실제 호박(pumpkin)을 가져와서 측정하는 시간을 가진다고 생각해보자. 호박은 좋은 쓸거리가 되기도 한다. 호박의 여러가지 성질을 묘사하는 글을 쓰거나, 아이들이 그 호박을 장식해서 꾸미고 색칠하기도 한다. 그리고 이 주제는 10월 31일날 할로윈 퍼레이드를 멋지게 하고 호박을 집으로 가져감으로서 대장정의 끝을 낸다.

학년이 높아 갈 수록 역사와 사회적 현상을 주제로 더욱 강조하기도 한다. 예를 들면, 선거(election, voting)나 인종 존중(Black History month)에 관한 문제 말이다.
현재 우리 초등학교에서 사용하는 주요 “주제(themes)”를 월별로 묶어 공유한다. 참고로 미국학기는 8월(August)에 시작하기 때문에 그 달에 나를 소개하고, 같은 반 친구를 알아가는 것에 중점을 두는 활동을 많이 한다.
