Autism and Social Skills

Play and Social Skills are such an important part of school life and in any child’s development. Unfortunately, most of my students with autism do not equip this skill or some do not appear to have that “motivation” when entering school. Many students with autism appear to play “alone”, and they even avoid the crowds during recess.

Let’s look at this issue with the “can’t do or won’t do” approach.

Can they(my students with autism) have adequate skills to initiate, maintain and terminate this social interaction with peers? If not, what can we do to TEACH these critical skills?

To add social skills groups into my program, I adapted Social Savvy and Peer Play and the Autism by Dr. Wolfberg. These are great resources.

Once I read and studied these 2 books, I also looked for video modelings on how to facilitate social interactions, run/set up a playgroup. There is not a whole lot out there. These are some that I started with.

If you need more resources to read before starting your own play and social skills group, check out my resource below.
