Carly’s Voice: Breaking through Autism

It is a sensational book! Highly recommended for anyone working with individuals with an autism spectrum disorder, or parents of those- This brings a totally different way of seeing my students and anyone who is heavily impacted by autism. As a teacher, it made me go through a lot of reflection on what’s really important to teach and HOW.

My take aways from Carly’s story… She benefited from:

Incredible support from her family and tutors.

Intensive behavior treatment program focusing on skill acquisition such as expressive communication and fine motor skills, etc.

AAC device(proloque) to promote expressive language.

Typing on computer

Use of her motivation to encourage (food, fashion, boys, etc)

Consistent adults as support

**she later expressed how much she enjoyed listening to Dad reading to her every night even though she could not say a thing at the moment.
