Journal Writing is to help students have opportunities to recall their day, especially around special activities, assigned chores, DIS, lunch/snack items…etc. This also could be a chance for them to work on functional writing.
and..I shouldn’t forget that this will be a GREAT way to communicate with parents as well. As a kid takes his journal binder(book) home, parents get to read what’s his day like…so they can talk about the day. For a younger student(elementary level), I believe it is a crucial component for a kid’s success in learning.
I currently use 3 different versions in my class..

Green one is created for younger students. Those who have difficulty discriminating multiple pictures on the page…they can chose a picture icon(pre-cut) and paste in the field of 2. E.g., what was your job? wiping table or vacuum.
Parents and teacher may make comments around a kid’s day as well. E.g., Johnny didn’t eat breakfast this morning. or No sleep, etc.
