What is Natural Environment Teaching

Don’t I look happy?
Our favorite time of the day is…snack activity. It will normally happen around 10:40am to 11. It is highly structured and routine based. There are usually 4 students joining at the kidney table with me(or one of my wonderful staff).

NET is an ABA teaching technique called Natural Environment Teaching. Within the most natural routine activity(snack here), students interact with their teacher using different means of communication and practicing social skills.

2 of my students bring their PECS book to communicate their needs at the table.

2 of my verbal students work on using a complete sentence vs. single word communication.  I like to use visuals or gestural reminders rather than constant verbal prompting.

Plus, these students work on making money combination to “buy” snack from my snack menu. Popcorn, $0.75, etc.
All of them are working on “WAIT” with a visual cue. It is so hard to wait for the turn while a teacher is helping other kids, right? With that visual(yellow WAIT) in front of him, he understands what is expected better.PECS users are often not consistent with YES or NO in their responses. This is one of the areas my students practice at any given opportunity throughout the day.

Okay, how many goals are we working on for a 20-minute-long snack activity? It is such a crucial part of my program, plus they are so motivated with food anyway!! Can’t beat that strong MO.
