Edmark Reading Program

Are you looking for an effective reading curriculum for Special Education?

Edmark Rading Program is one of the oldest, most established sight word programs available in the special education market..I have encountered several different reading programs in the past and Edmark is my go-to.  It is mainly because our students are strong visual learners and tend to grasp sight words/vocabularies quickly and easily than any other components of reading-  Repetition, the pace could also play important role.

You or your district can purchase the program at Pro-Ed.

Edmark Raeding Program consists of  2 level of difficulties and Functional Word Series. It is also available in a print and computer format. I uses both- depending on the students’ responsiveness. I have a student who becomes extremely distracted by a computer screen. Then, I would go with a hard copy version. Nevertheless,  most of my students are super motivated by computer version. One of my student calls it, “a Dog and a man” (If you use Edmark, you will know what I mean 🤪 )

Each lesson starts with Words Recognition. E.g, “Find ______”

Once some of these sight words are established, students get to move on to the simple phrase and sentence level.

The format is very structured, so my students always enjoy them.  Matching a sentence/ phrase to its corresponding picture would help teachers gauge a student’s comprehension of words/sentences. This is greatly helpful esepcially with students with limited language skills.

How to reinforce

Edmark is great! But we always struggle with finding ways to reinforce these words (skills) in different ways. It’s all about generalizing skills to be a successful learner.

💓 These are ways I normally go about:

  1. Engage in Edmark Reading Online 1-2 sessions a day
  2. Go over flashcards in isolation
  3. Practice those words in digital formats (with non-identicial stimuli)
  4. Wrok on hands-on worksheets involving paper-pencil-cut-paste.
