In my morning meeting, I love the moment when I told my students that we are not coming to school for the next 3 days. One of them made the biggest smile of his and said, “That’s what I am talking about!!” No matter what reason, this child loves a long weekend 😀

January activity ideas

For the topic of Martin Luther King Jr., I like to read several books about him and his story with the students. We ended up watching a short video clip followed by making a mini book.

Martin Luther King Jr. Free Book (K-2nd)

Martin Luther King Jr (K-3rd)

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Mini Unit (PreK-1st)

Pre-teaching the concepts by introducing the key words and phrases from the book helped my readers decode as well as comprehend the context.

Differentiated lessons by setting up different goals for each group of students help increase the understanding of the concepts as well.

Group 1:
focused on matching a word/phrase to its corresponding picture.

Group 2:
worked on putting 2-3 words together to produce a complete sentence.

Group 3:
spent some time sequencing each page in order and retelling. Use the transition words like first, next, and then.
